You\u2019ve gotta hand it to Usher<\/a>\u2014the man simply doesn\u2019t age.<\/em> Not only that, but his choice of fits is remarkably consistent: Compare the picture of him from last night, accepting BET\u2019s Lifetime Achievement award in a white blazer and jeans, to one from the 2005 Soul Train Awards where he rocked\u2026a white dinner jacket and jeans<\/em>. But what he wasn\u2019t<\/em> wearing 20 years ago was a mind-blowingly beautiful, vintage Piaget watch from the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sourced by the horological wizards over at\u00a0Analog:Shift<\/a>\u2014the vintage and pre-owned division of the retail giant Watches of Switzerland\u2014the timepiece in question is housed in a yellow gold case with an integrated bracelet in a basketweave pattern, making it as much a sublime piece of jewelry as it is a functional wristwatch. Its dial, meanwhile, is entirely factory-set with pav\u00e9 diamonds, with only a subtle dauphine handset and the Piaget wordmark to disturb its elegant tapestry. Measuring 24mm in diameter, it features a hand-wound movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the past few years, men have gravitated toward\u00a0smaller and smaller watches<\/a>. And we\u2019re not even talking about\u00a0relatively<\/em>\u00a0smaller watches\u2014as in sub-40mm\u00a0dive watches<\/a>, or 36mm\u00a0dress watches<\/a>, the type of fare that was once considered standard. We\u2019re talking about dainty, sub-30mm, objectively\u00a0teensy<\/em>\u00a0timepieces<\/a>\u00a0that are largely still marketed to female clientele, even when a watch company doesn\u2019t divide its catalog into men\u2019s and women\u2019s pieces. But in the grand pendulum swing away from the 47mm\u00a0Panerais<\/a>\u00a0and the 44mm\u00a0IWCs<\/a>\u00a0of the late \u201890s and early \u20182000s, stylish men seem to be gravitating toward the far end of the size spectrum, brandishing elegant little\u00a0Cartiers<\/a>, unisex\u00a0Chopards<\/a>, and, yes, itty-bitty\u00a0Piagets<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some men will inevitably find this far-left quadrant of the diameter graph difficult to stomach, but we should remind you of a few key points. First of all, the A-11, the hand-wound mil-spec watch of the American (and other) forces during the Second World War, measured roughly 31mm wide. (It was made by several companies and thus the case diameters weren\u2019t completely uniform.) Positively teensy,<\/em> and yet, it was worn by an army of millions of battle-hardened soldiers. Secondly: Some of the most exquisite, creative, downright beautiful watches ever designed were either quite small,<\/em> or they were outright designed for women\u2019s wrists, meaning they are hella small.<\/em> Are you ready to write off an entire realm of horological beauty just because of a diminutive case diameter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clearly, Usher is not. The man joins the ranks of the intrepid few who have been strapping on watches that ride the fine line between horlogerie<\/em> and bijoux<\/em> for the past two or three years\u2014men like Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/a>, Tyler the Creator<\/a>, and Bad Bunny<\/a>, who clearly don\u2019t care about the men\u2019s-women\u2019s divide. (Or your opinion on it, for that matter.) Usher\u2019s Piaget is an ultra-fine, left-of-center approach to this particularly horological problem, but if you\u2019re looking to go small, then don\u2019t overthink it: Grab yourself a Tank Must<\/a>, and join the ranks of the confident.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
