Last night Usher added to the now quite sizable list of men in small (to medium) watches from the ’70s on the red carpet. Sporting an 18k yellow gold vintage manual-winding Piaget with diamond pavé dial and basket weave bracelet, Usher has (un)officially ingratiated himself into a trend that has slowly taken over the world-wide-watch web. But let’s remember that, for the laymen at home, who aren’t perusing images of Cartier London and Patek stone dials on Instagram in their free time, seeing a vintage gold watch rather than a sportier Rolex or AP will make for a refreshing change.

Piaget is still having a moment. After the Polo 79 release and vintage resurgence (read Tony’s thoroughly comprehensive guide to the vintage Polo here), it seems like the momentum shows no sign of slowing down. As much as we look to Instagram as the gospel truth for what’s trending in our beloved watch community, what’s trending in the real world usually comes down to what the celebrities are wearing. And, Usher, who performed at this year’s Super Bowl, was wearing vintage Piaget to accept his BET Lifetime Achievement Award.

Perhaps the desire for these types of watches in our enthusiast bubble is merely a function of trend cycles, but I like to think big picture. Luckily, every time I start doubting humanity for its abhorrent obsession with athleisure and refusal to get dressed up, by some miracle of the watch gods, I can breathe a comfortable sigh of relief. Celebrities in diamond-set watches from the ’70s means glamour is alive and well!

To pick up his BET Lifetime Achievement award, the “Yeah!” singer wore a jacket and jeans that threw it back to 2005—and a gorgeous gold Piaget that threw it back even further.

You’ve gotta hand it to Usher—the man simply doesn’t age. Not only that, but his choice of fits is remarkably consistent: Compare the picture of him from last night, accepting BET’s Lifetime Achievement award in a white blazer and jeans, to one from the 2005 Soul Train Awards where he rocked…a white dinner jacket and jeans. But what he wasn’t wearing 20 years ago was a mind-blowingly beautiful, vintage Piaget watch from the 1970s.

Sourced by the horological wizards over at Analog:Shift—the vintage and pre-owned division of the retail giant Watches of Switzerland—the timepiece in question is housed in a yellow gold case with an integrated bracelet in a basketweave pattern, making it as much a sublime piece of jewelry as it is a functional wristwatch. Its dial, meanwhile, is entirely factory-set with pavé diamonds, with only a subtle dauphine handset and the Piaget wordmark to disturb its elegant tapestry. Measuring 24mm in diameter, it features a hand-wound movement.

For the past few years, men have gravitated toward smaller and smaller watches. And we’re not even talking about relatively smaller watches—as in sub-40mm dive watches, or 36mm dress watches, the type of fare that was once considered standard. We’re talking about dainty, sub-30mm, objectively teensy timepieces that are largely still marketed to female clientele, even when a watch company doesn’t divide its catalog into men’s and women’s pieces. But in the grand pendulum swing away from the 47mm Panerais and the 44mm IWCs of the late ‘90s and early ‘2000s, stylish men seem to be gravitating toward the far end of the size spectrum, brandishing elegant little Cartiers, unisex Chopards, and, yes, itty-bitty Piagets.

Some men will inevitably find this far-left quadrant of the diameter graph difficult to stomach, but we should remind you of a few key points. First of all, the A-11, the hand-wound mil-spec watch of the American (and other) forces during the Second World War, measured roughly 31mm wide. (It was made by several companies and thus the case diameters weren’t completely uniform.) Positively teensy, and yet, it was worn by an army of millions of battle-hardened soldiers. Secondly: Some of the most exquisite, creative, downright beautiful watches ever designed were either quite small, or they were outright designed for women’s wrists, meaning they are hella small. Are you ready to write off an entire realm of horological beauty just because of a diminutive case diameter?

Clearly, Usher is not. The man joins the ranks of the intrepid few who have been strapping on watches that ride the fine line between horlogerie and bijoux for the past two or three years—men like Timothée Chalamet, Tyler the Creator, and Bad Bunny, who clearly don’t care about the men’s-women’s divide. (Or your opinion on it, for that matter.) Usher’s Piaget is an ultra-fine, left-of-center approach to this particularly horological problem, but if you’re looking to go small, then don’t overthink it: Grab yourself a Tank Must, and join the ranks of the confident.

Brescia, June 15th, 2024 – The 2200-kilometer tour de force of the 1000 Miglia 2024 concluded in Brescia on June 15th. The 421 competing crews, with their vintage gems built between 1927 and 1957, followed the classic route from Brescia to Rome and back in an anti-clockwise direction, mirroring the heroes of the first editions of the 1000 Miglia. The leg finishes included Turin (for the first time in its history), Viareggio, Rome, and San Lazzaro di Savena, before returning to Brescia with the final parade along Viale Venezia.

Record-Breaking Triumph

Andrea Vesco and Fabio Salvinelli have achieved a remarkable feat unprecedented in the history of the Most Beautiful Race In The World. They secured their fourth consecutive championship victory driving their 1929 Alfa Romeo 6c 1750 Ss Spider Zagato — an accomplishment that will prove challenging to match in the future. Remarkably, for Vesco, this marks his fifth consecutive win (out of a total of seven victories), including his 2020 triumph alongside his father.

Gianmario Fontanella and Anna Maria Covelli took a well-deserved second place with their 1927 Lancia Lambda Casaro VII Serie, followed by Alberto Aliverti and Stefano Valente, also competing with a 1929 6C.

For the 37th consecutive year, Chopard has proudly served as the official timekeeper and global sponsor of the legendary 1000 Miglia, maintaining one of the longest- standing relationships in history between a watchmaker and a motoring event. The new Mille Miglia timepieces, unveiled in Brescia at the race’s start, were the perfect companions for this year’s event.

Journey of Legends

From the starting line in Brescia, the crews embarked on an anticlockwise journey. They headed to the first overnight stop in Turin before tracing northern Italy’s west coast the following day, reaching the vibrant Ligurian capital of Genoa for lunch—a first-time occurrence. The second day concluded halfway to Rome in Viareggio, after an afternoon of racing between the sea and the mountains. The time control that marked the end of the second stage was in Torre del Lago Puccini, commemorating a century since the Maestro’s passing.

On the third day, the crews continued toward Rome, reaching the halfway point. Upon arriving in the capital, the customary end-of-stage time control awaited them in Villa Borghese Park. The parade of the 421 historic cars along Via Veneto and the spectacular passage by the Colosseum at nightfall created a unique spectacle worthy of the world’s most beautiful race.

The fourth day saw the 1000 Miglia conclude in San Lazzaro di Savena after a challenging race. The scenic route through Tuscany showcased breathtaking landscapes, from the shores of Lake Trasimeno to the iconic Piazza del Campo in Siena. The event also featured timed trials in picturesque locations like San Gimignanello and Radda in Chianti, making it a memorable and demanding stage for the participants. On the fifth day, the time control that marked the conclusion of the 2200-kilometer journey awaited the crews on Via Bormioli in Brescia. Subsequently, the cars paraded across the platform on Viale Venezia. In the following hours, the Red Arrow’s Traveling Museum graced the streets and squares of the city center, with the award ceremony taking place on the stage of the Notte Bianca in Piazza della Loggia.

More than 440 of the world’s finest classic cars, 1,000 miles of Italy’s most breathtaking roads, two special new chronographs and Chopard on the start line. It can mean only one thing: the 2024 edition of the 1000 Miglia. For the 37 th year in succession, Chopard will again serve as the official timekeeper and world sponsor of ‘the most beautiful race in the world’, furthering a relationship that is one of the longest in history between a watchmaker and a motoring event. Equally enduring is Chopard co-president Karl Friedrich Scheufele’s love for the 1000 Miglia, and he will again take part – for the 36th time – alongside his dear friend Jacky Ickx driving the Scheufele family’s beloved ‘metallic strawberry’ Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing (look out for number 264).

Chopard pays tribute to a racing legend

This year, Chopard’s familiar booth on Brescia’s Piazza Vittoria – a few minutes from the Viale Venezia start and finish ramp – will be decorated to pay tribute to Brussels-born Jacky Ickx, who won the Le Mans 24 Hours race no fewer than six times between 1966 and 1985. He also achieved eight wins and 25 podiums in Formula One and won both the 1975 Cam-Am series and the gruelling Paris-Dakar Rally in 1983. As well as evocative images and memorabilia charting Jacky Ickx’s remarkable racing career, the booth will showcase the two special editions of the Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph JX7 recently unveiled in tribute to him.

The 2024 Mille Miglia editions revealed

Competitors will also be able to see the eagerly anticipated 2024 Mille Miglia special editions – the 36th in succession – which, this year, comprise two distinct models. Both will be launched at a special dinner taking place on the eve of the start at the Brescia’s fabulous Areadocks, a restaurant, bar and boutique hotel re-purposed from a disused railway warehouse.

The first model is the Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph in ultra-resistant and exclusive Lucent Steel™, made with a recycling rate of at least 80%. The 40.5mm diameter chronograph features a ‘La Gara’ (or ‘competition’) dial inspired by motor racing’s celebrated chequered flag. It is topped by a superb ‘glass box’ crystal which facilitates maximum visibility at all times, while a notched winding crown and knurled pushers recall a sports car’s brake pedals while also providing optimum grip. A sapphire crystal caseback offers a bird’s-eye view onto the mechanical self-winding, chronometer-certified movement, and a perforated strap in black calfskin matches the chronograph subdials while evoking the design of traditional driving gloves.

The second timepiece dedicated to this year’s race is the Mille Miglia GTS Chrono Limited Italian Edition, which features a 44-mm case made from lightweight, beadblasted titanium. It will be made in just 100 examples as a pure celebration of the country in which the legendary race was born.

The long and winding road 

Either of the new Mille Miglia timepieces would make the perfect companion for this year’s race, which will see the first car leave the start ramp at noon, with the others following at 20-second intervals in order of age, oldest first. Once underway, the crews will head-off in an anticlockwise direction to the first overnight stop in Turin before hugging northern Italy’s west coast the following day, arriving (for the first time) in the vibrant Ligurian capital of Genoa for lunch.

That second day finishes halfway to Rome in Viareggio, with the crews then heading inland the next morning via the beautifully preserved and historic town of Lucca before making it to the ‘Eternal City’ by nightfall.

The fourth leg, meanwhile, takes in the thrilling and testing Prato, Futa and Raticosa passes before the next day’s final run back to Brescia – where, after approximately 1,076 miles, the long-anticipated chequered flag awaits.

Long and proud history of epic racing

Created in 1923, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is the oldest and one of the most prestigious car races in the world. A stern test of the reliability of the machines as well as the physical and mental stamina of the drivers, Le Mans attracts some of the greatest names in motor sport. On the 13.6-kilometre (8.4 miles) Circuit de la Sarthe in north-west France, some 62 cars, each with teams of three drivers, race against each other, divided into two Prototype and one GT Class. The winning team is the one which covers the greatest distance in 24 hours, some 5,300 kilometres (3,293 miles). Rolex has been the Official Timepiece of the race since 2001.

Continuous innovation over the decades

Since its inaugural edition, the mythical event has been an ideal testing ground for the many advances in motor sport technologies. The trialling of a new road surface in 1922 (still viable today), improvements to safety, engines and aerodynamics, as well as, since 2022, the requirement for all cars to run on 100 per cent renewable biofuel, are among the notable developments marking a century of progress supported by this legendary endurance race. New automotive manufacturers contesting the top class in 2024 include Alpine, BMW and Lamborghini, emphasizes the importance and relevance of the event for the car industry.

Tom Kristensen: ‘Mr Le Mans’

Tom Kristensen has well and truly earned his nickname. The most successful driver in the legendary race’s history, he won it a record nine times, starting with his debut in 1997. A Rolex Testimonee since 2010, the Danish racing driver was FIA World Endurance champion in 2013. “You carry a win at Le Mans with you forever. I feel proud and humble reflecting on the race’s legacy and Rolex’s involvement with motor sport. Together they are the perfect combination; both striving for excellence through persistence, technical innovation and human endeavour.”

The Cosmograph Daytona: a singular prize

The winners of the top class of the 24 Hours of Le Mans receive an Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona, specially engraved for the occasion. Chef Kang has already built an impressive resume overseas, although still in his early 30s. After becoming the youngest head chef at Nobu Bahamas (part of renowned chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s empire), Kang has since worked in various locations around the world before returning to Seoul, Korea, in 2014. The World’s Deepest Man

William Trubridge spent the first 18 months of his life in the North of England until his parents
decided to sell almost everything they owned and buy a boat in Spain. Keen to leave the rainy
British weather behind them, they sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Islands,
passing through the Panama Canal to the Galapagos Islands, and on to the daisy chain of Pacific
Islands, before arriving in New Zealand – by which time William was five years old. This incredible
experience enabled him to learn to swim by the age of two and he spent his early years as much
in the water as out of it. The water became both his playground and his classroom. By the age of
eight, he was already descending to a depth of 15 metres, while collecting rocks from the reef with
his brother. At the age of eleven, the family returned to land and he had a normal teenage life, but
the sea always beckoned. He discovered freediving in his 20s and hasn’t looked back since.

Today, he is the world’s deepest man, having descended 102 metres (334 feet) under the water,
completely unaided and on a single breath. He also holds 18 freediving records and has achieved
six world championship titles. In addition to his freediving activities, he is also a keynote speaker,
sharing how he neutralizes stress and fear in his deepest dives and how to go “below the surface”
of consciousness to access intuition and creativity.

Freediving offers more than just sporting diversion; it is a journey into yourself, a victory over fear
and instinct, and an exercise in mental discipline, telling your body to relax despite the fact that
literally every cell is clamoring for air,” says William.

The freediving champion is the ideal athlete for Montblanc’s line of timepieces and in particular

This particular model, inspired by the first movie seen by Jacob Arabo upon his arrival in the U.S., embodies a piece of art with a personal backstory. “When I first came to the USA from Uzbekistan in 1979, I was 14 years old, didn’t speak the language and my family didn’t have a penny to its name, says Jacob Arabo. It took me two years to earn the time and money to go to the movies. The Godfather was being released again; it was the first movie I saw in a theater.”
 
Limited to 88 pieces, this iconic timepiece features a design inspired by “The Godfather,” integrating intricate details such as a miniature of Don Vito Corleone wearing a red rose on his lapel. It’s one of the key symbols of the character, and this is the way he is being depicted, as a three-dimensional figurine, sitting in the center of it all.
 
When activated, the music box begins playing its tune, causing the movement components to rotate together around a central axis. This includes the tourbillon and the cylinders, as well as the central miniature and other visible parts, like the dial for hours and minutes, which rotates in the opposite direction to stay upright as the rest of the mechanism moves.
 
The timepiece stands out with a triple-axis tourbillon, enhancing its unique nature and showcasing McGregor’s affinity for luxury watches.
